For an ongoing research project MAUC designed scripts in grasshopper that adapt a facade's aperture to cumulative solar exposure. The heat load of a facade can be reduced by optimizing the facade openings to solar radiation. A performative design approach like this results by definition in a design that is unique to this specific location.
The shape of the building is mapped with cumulative solar exposure for a certain location, this is visualised by the colorful volume hovering above the building. Red means high exposure, blue means low exposure. The script that distributes the facade elements samples the local exposure for each of the elements and changes its aperture accordingly.
Not shown in the movie is the fact that obstacles like neighboring buildings or trees are also taken into account for the mapping of the exposure. Performative design is context driven by default. A building designed for Reykjavik would have a different facade due to the predominantly low sun, as opposed to Dubai where the sun is strong but mainly high in the sky.
